Cards For Everyone!

Did you know today is National Trading Card Day? Topps and Upper Deck sure don't; the latter is celebrating in April while the former doesn't acnowledge this at all. Figures I just gave those jerks $60+.

I never order on-demand cards but the US won Men's hockey gold for the first time in my life - and Devils star Jack Hughes managed to score the game winner in between injuries and dates with his Canadian boo.

My wife would have loved that... for about five minutes. At least our boy Charlie McAvoy is an ally.

So yeah, I ordered the five-card pack of Jack Hughes cards from Topps. Hopefully they will be five different cards and at least one will be some type of parallel. I'm not holding my breath for the 1 of 1  inscripted auto.

My youngest daughter was really into the Olympics this winter. She watched prime time events with me almost every night. Figure skating was her favorite, so I ordered an Alysa Liu card along with the Jack pack.

The first week was all about Ilia Malinin, who quickly became her first athlete crush (though she refused to use that term.) Ilia was one of the few American stars who didn't win gold but he's young enough to come back in 2030. I know all too well how it feels to watch your favorite Olympian fall on their butt

While I was ordering the Hughes and Liu, daughter asked if they had any Ilia cards. They did, but the on demand window expired. So I ordered Topps Chrome singles off Sportlots instead.

Those haven't arrived yet (damn snowstorm) but I did get some trading cards for my oldest daughter.

She's going to be in the Spring production of Little Shop of Horrors and I found a few of these for her. I know I had at least one pack when I was a wee lad because the "Say Aarggh" card was one of the few things I remembered about the movie.

I've been buying a lot of cards lately - and not just for myself. I even bought a soccer card for my brother in law as a birthday gift.

And I've got cards for you, dear reader.

I promised Night Owl some Dodgers and I promised Fuji some Topps Holiday set fillers, and I haven't shipped anything out just yet. Excuses include: Olympic Fever, two blizzards, and finishing my taxes. Also I've completed cataloging all of my sports cards except baseball and I'll have more to send out once I'm done.

Bo sent me some Terry Francona cards (thanks Bo!!) so I've got to scrounge up something for him, too.
Bo, let me know what I can send you in return!

Dennis, I haven't forgotten about you. I'll have more than enough Tigers cards for a PWE once I complete the cataloging.

As for my collection, the team binders are getting close to full, and my Women On Cards binder should get a big boost soon with the incoming Shiffrin and Liu cards. I haven't seen 2026 Topps Chrome in stores and I bought the singles blind, but there's an insert set mimicing the 1986 Topps football design.

Not sure if I like the Chrome coloring, but the original green definitely would not work for ice sports.

                                                    🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅

After week one of the Olympics and the Ilia Malinin hype I wondered aloud who this year's Ice Princess would be. "Ice princess?" My daughter asked.

I explained that the ladies' figure skaters are usually elegant girls with pretty dresses and bright smiles - because I had the pageant episode of The Simpsons on my mind for some reason. "When I grow up, I wanna be a sweetie pie!"

Alysa was our belle of the snow ball this year, and she was a sweetie pie for sure - but not in the stereotypical way. In fact all the American skater ladies were sweethearts; Amber Glenn had me all emotional after this Mama Bear move for Japanese skater (and silver medalist) Kaori Sakamoto:

I frickin love these ladies. But man -- this headline is something else:

Whatever you think of "woke bitches" there's no way that "from New Jersey" is a marginalized group.

Then again...maybe they're onto something?

Thanks for reading!

  1. [I understand if you decline to post this long rant which includes politics]
I'm happy both the women's and men's teams won gold while being frustrated by the men's team not doing nearly enough to stand up for the women. Trump, Patel, and their ilk are anti-woman, anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigrant, and anti-foreigner while being pro-pedophile, and all of those things are 100% opposite of the values the Olympics and these sports embody. Shame on the men for not saying something along the lines of "We couldn't pass up the opportunity to go to the White House, but we disagree with the way our teammates have been treated." I understand it being difficult to do so in the moment, but there's no excuse not to have done so afterwards.

I do hope for a better world for your daughters. And I think it's very cool that one of them will be acting in LSoH--I hope she has a blast!
